A Guide to the Different Types of CCTV Cameras (and Alarm Systems Cameras)

Bullet Cameras

Bullet cameras are one of the most recognisable CCTV camera types, thanks to their classic cylindrical shape. They are commonly used where you need to clearly see activity over a longer range, such as access roads or perimeter fencing.

Bullet cameras are available in a wide range of sizes and specifications, from compact short-range models to larger, more powerful cameras designed for long-distance viewing. Depending on the model, bullet cameras can offer:

• More easily recognised, due to their shape, which can make them an excellent deterrent;

 Turret Cameras

Turret cameras are one of the most popular modern CCTV camera types due to their flexibility, reliability, and image quality. They are available in a large number of variations, with manufacturers offering multiple housing sizes, from very compact units to larger, more powerful models. Turret cameras are sold with a variety of different resolutions, and most offer infrared, low-light colour, or hybrid night vision options.

Rather than being enclosed, turret cameras have an open lens design. This reduces infrared reflection and glare, which is why they can deliver superior night-time images compared to some other camera styles. Turret cameras are compact, discreet, and extremely versatile.

 Dome Cameras

Dome cameras are similar in function to turret cameras but are housed within a protective dome casing, offering additional durability and discretion. As the lens is concealed behind a tinted dome, it is often difficult to tell which direction the camera is facing, which can add an extra layer of security.

PTZ Cameras

 PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) cameras offer flexible, powerful coverage with remote control functionality. These movements can be controlled manually from a site office, via a mobile device, or by a professional remote monitoring centre. Many PTZ cameras also feature preset patrol routes, automatically scanning defined areas at scheduled intervals, or pick up movement and move to capture it as it unfolds.

The ability to zoom in without losing image clarity allows operators to identify issues quickly, from animal welfare checks to unauthorised access. In many cases, one PTZ camera can replace several fixed cameras, making them a cost-effective solution. Grants may also be available depending on application and location. PTZ cameras are most often utilised in livestock areas for animal welfare, on storage compounds, and in town centres.

 ANPR Cameras

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras are designed specifically to capture vehicle number plates. Due to the reflective nature of number plates, standard CCTV cameras often struggle in low light to capture numberplates. ANPR cameras overcome this, making them invaluable for both security and access management. As they have a very specific job, only capturing numberplates, they are often paired with an overview camera that views other specifics such as the car model.

Thermal Imaging Cameras

Video Motion Detectors (VMDs)

Most CCTV cameras use motion detecting algorithms to record only when motion is detected, and therefore cut the amount of footage being captured by not recording when nothing is moving. It is not a particularly new revolution, although it is extremely handy.

Where VMDs differ is that they are advanced hybrid alarm sensors with a built-in camera. Essentially they are an alarm system, but you know exactly who set off the alarm when it alerts to your mobile.

By combining alarm technology with video verification, it can offer one of the most advanced forms of site protection. Unlike traditional motion sensors in alarm systems, VMDs include a built-in camera, which captures images or sometimes video clips when triggered. The algorithms that they use are sophisticated, only identifying human movement, which eliminates false alarms caused by animals, moving foliage, or machinery.
